Two Direct Support Professionals, one shared purpose.

Today, we are proud to highlight two incredible Direct Support Professionals, Ms. Melanie and Ms. Blanche, who work together to support Ms. Yma. Each brings her own journey, perspective, and heart into the work they do.

A Calling Rooted in Care

It was a natural extension of who they are. Their work is also strengthened by a circle of support that goes beyond daily care. Service Coordinator Ms. Janelle Johnson plays a key role in advocating for Ms. Yma’s needs, ensuring services are aligned and consistent. Alongside her, Ms. Yma’s mother, Ms. Maria, remains an essential part of her support system, offering insight, history, and a deep understanding that helps guide the care she receives. Ms. Melanie shares that her passion has always been rooted in helping others live more independently, especially individuals with disabilities. That desire to empower and uplift continues to guide her every day as she supports Ms. Yma. Similarly, Ms. Blanche’s journey began at home. Caring for her grandmother opened her heart to a lifelong mission of supporting individuals who are physically, mentally, and psychologically challenged. For her, caregiving is not just work. It is a purpose she now brings into her support for Ms. Yma.

Navigating Challenges with Strength and Patience

The role of a DSP comes with real challenges. These require emotional strength, adaptability, and deep understanding. For Ms. Melanie, one of the most demanding aspects is supporting someone who is nonverbal. Without words, communication becomes a careful process of observation, patience, and trust. “It takes time to understand what they truly want,” she reflects. “If I miss a cue, I feel like I did not fully support them the way they deserve.” “Being able to understand and speak for someone who cannot express it, that is a big win,” she shares. This level of attentiveness is especially important in her work with Ms. Yma, where consistency and observation are key to building trust and connection. Ms. Blanche, on the other hand, highlights the physical and emotional challenges that can arise when supporting individuals with complex needs. At times, behaviors such as aggression, including scratching, biting, or pushing, can occur. For Ms. Blanche, pride comes from the act of giving itself. She finds fulfillment in being able to care for others, knowing that one day, she too may need that same level of compassion. “I am proud of communicating with individuals so I can give them the best care they need,” she says, reflecting on her work with Ms. Yma. These experiences reflect the reality of the work. It is not always easy, but it is always meaningful.

A Shared Impact

While their experiences and challenges may differ, their purpose is the same. They want to ensure she feels understood, safe, and cared for. Their work reminds us that caregiving is not just about assistance. It is about connection. It is about learning someone’s preferences without words, staying calm in difficult moments, and showing up with compassion every single day.
