Because behind every smile, every breakthrough, and every step forward—there is a DSP who believed

At Mercyland Healthcare, our Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are the heart of our mission: showing up every day with compassion, dedication, and a deep commitment to empowering individuals with IDD.

In today’s feature, we’re shining a light on two of our incredible DSP professionals as they share their personal journeys, the experiences that shaped them, and the purpose that drives their work. Through their stories, we hope to highlight the impact of true person-centered care, and the human connection that makes it all possible.

Helping Others Shine: Yannick’s Heartfelt Journey as a DSP

For more than eight years, Yannick has dedicated his life to being a Direct Support Professional (DSP). His passion for the work shines through every story he tells, every challenge he overcomes, and e

very smile he helps create. For him, being a DSP is more than a job — it’s a calling rooted in dignity, advocacy, and genuine human connection.

A Success Story: Working With Tremain

One of the accomplishments Yannick is most proud of is the progress he has supported Mr. Jones in achieving over the past five to six months. When they first began working together, Mr. Jones was quiet, reserved, and hesitant to engage in conversation, but by building on his interests—particularly his love for basketball and working—Yannick encouraged him to communicate his needs and thoughts with growing confidence.

“Now, Tremain can have a conversation. He can say, ‘How are you doing?’ and share what happenedover the weekend—he couldn’t do that before,” Yannick shared.

As trust developed, Mr. Jones began initiating communication more often and was connected to meaningful volunteer opportunities at Chef’s Table and the Veterans Wearhouse, where he felt encouraged and valued by peers. Today, he greets others with a smile and confidently starts conversations, progress his host parent, Ms. Rita, has joyfully noticed, with vital support and advocacy from his service coordinator, Mr. Vernon Romane. This success story reflects Mercyland Healthcare’s belief that small but mighty steps—like building confidence—lead to greater goals such as independence and meaningful community integration.

Finding Purpose Through Service and Seeing Goals Come to Life: Mr. Brinet

For Mr. Brinet, becoming a DSP was not just a career choice; it was something that grew naturally from family, community, and a desire to make a difference. When he arrived in the United States, his aunt welcomed him into her company in Virginia, introducing him to a field that instantly resonated with him.

“It was something from within,” he shared. “I found joy and fulfillment in giving back to the community and helping individuals achieve their goals.”

His perspective is clear: every difficulty is part of a path toward understanding, patience, and growth. And every breakthrough — no matter how small — matters.

A Success Story: Working With Mr. Toogood

When they first began working together, Mr. Toogood experienced challenges with personal care that affected his confidence and made medical visits more difficult. Through consistent guidance, encouragement, and supportive coaching, Mr. Brinet has helped Mr. Toogood strengthen his daily self-care routines, build confidence in his appearance, and better understand the importance of caring for his overall health. As a result, Mr. Toogood is now able to engage more comfortably with peers and actively work toward employment—an area he is deeply passionate about. This progress is made possible by a dedicated care team working together, including the vital guidance and advocacy of his dad & service coordinator, Ms. Justine Grant, who ensures Mr. Toogood receives the support he needs to continue moving forward.

Though their paths are different, both of our excellent DSPs share the same core belief: supporting individuals with IDD is more than a job, it’s a commitment to helping people grow, thrive, and reach their fullest potential. Their stories remind us that behind every skill achieved, every milestone reached, and every goal met, there is a dedicated professional walking alongside the journey.

At Mercyland Healthcare, we are honored to have DSPs whose hearts and dedication make all the difference.
