Responsibilities include assisting with daily personal tasks, meal preparation, housekeeping, transportation, medication reminders, and social engagement. DSPs also support vocational training, ensure safety, protect individual rights, and observe for changes in health or emotional well-being. Strong communication, organizational skills, and a positive, professional attitude are essential, along with the ability to work collaboratively and handle emergency situations. A high school diploma, CPR/First Aid Certification, and proficiency in English are required.

Licensed wellness contractors—including Occupational Therapists (OT), Physical Therapists (PT), Speech Therapists, and Employment Coaches—play a vital role in supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) under the District of Columbia’s Individual and Family Support (IFS) Waiver program. These professionals deliver person-centered services designed to enhance independence, functional skills, and community participation. Services are provided in various settings, including homes, day programs, and community environments, and may be delivered in-person or through remote supports, depending on individual needs and preferences. The goal is to empower participants to achieve greater autonomy and integration into their communities.
