Behind every smile, every breakthrough, and every step forward, there is a DSP who believed.
At Mercyland Healthcare, our Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are the heart of our mission. They show up every day with compassion, dedication, and a deep commitment to empowering people with IDD.
Today, we are shining a light on two of our DSPs. They share their own journeys, the experiences that shaped them, and the purpose that drives their work. Their stories show what true person-centered care looks like, and the human connection that makes it possible.
Helping others shine: Yannick’s journey as a DSP
For more than eight years, Yannick has dedicated his life to being a Direct Support Professional. His passion shows in every story he tells, every challenge he works through, and every smile he helps create. For him, being a DSP is more than a job. It is a calling rooted in dignity, advocacy, and genuine human connection.
A success story: working with Tremain

One of the accomplishments Yannick is most proud of is the progress he has supported Mr. Jones in making over the past five to six months. When they first started working together, Mr. Jones was quiet, reserved, and hesitant to talk. By building on his interests, especially his love of basketball and working, Yannick encouraged him to share his needs and thoughts with growing confidence.
“Now, Tremain can have a conversation. He can say, ‘How are you doing?’ and share what happened over the weekend. He couldn’t do that before.”
As trust grew, Mr. Jones began starting conversations more often. He was connected to meaningful volunteer roles at Chef’s Table and the Veterans Wearhouse, where he felt encouraged and valued by his peers. Today he greets people with a smile and confidently starts conversations. His host parent, Ms. Rita, has joyfully noticed the change, with steady support and advocacy from his service coordinator, Mr. Vernon Romane. This story reflects a belief we hold at Mercyland Healthcare. Small but mighty steps, like building confidence, lead to bigger goals such as independence and real community belonging.
Finding purpose through service: Mr. Brinet
For Mr. Brinet, becoming a DSP was not just a career choice. It grew naturally from family, community, and a desire to make a difference. When he arrived in the United States, his aunt welcomed him into her company in Virginia and introduced him to a field that resonated with him right away.
“It was something from within. I found joy and fulfillment in giving back to the community and helping people achieve their goals.”
His perspective is clear. Every difficulty is part of a path toward understanding, patience, and growth. And every breakthrough, no matter how small, matters.
A success story: working with Mr. Toogood

When they first began working together, Mr. Toogood faced challenges with personal care that affected his confidence and made medical visits harder. Through steady guidance, encouragement, and supportive coaching, Mr. Brinet has helped him strengthen his daily self-care routines, feel more confident in his appearance, and better understand the importance of caring for his health. As a result, Mr. Toogood now engages more comfortably with peers and is actively working toward employment, something he is deeply passionate about. This progress comes from a dedicated care team working together, including the guidance and advocacy of his dad and service coordinator, Ms. Justine Grant, who makes sure he has the support he needs to keep moving forward.
Their paths are different, but both DSPs share the same core belief. Supporting people with IDD is more than a job. It is a commitment to helping people grow, thrive, and reach their fullest potential. Their stories remind us that behind every skill gained, every milestone reached, and every goal met, there is a dedicated professional walking alongside the journey.
