Exceptional care begins with exceptional people.
This month, we are proud to shine a light on Katiana Julien, a dedicated Direct Support Professional (DSP) whose thoughtful, patient approach has made a meaningful difference in the life of the person she serves. Katiana supports Rolanda Maddox, in partnership with Service Coordinator Annissa Amegbe and guardians Renaldo Maddox, Rolanda’s father, and Gloria Baskerville.
“I try not to force or push her to do anything that she doesn’t want to do.” Katiana Julien, DSP
Learning her rhythm
Katiana became a DSP through an acquaintance, and from the very beginning she brought a quiet, observant approach to her role. Rather than rushing to interact, she took the time to watch and understand before stepping in. That patience paid off. She quickly noticed that Ms. Rolanda’s moods shift from day to day. Some days she prefers not to be bothered, and other days she is bright and giddy. Recognizing that rhythm lets Katiana adapt her support to meet Rolanda exactly where she is, day by day.
Giving her a voice

Respect for Rolanda’s autonomy is central to Katiana’s approach. She makes a point never to force or push Rolanda into anything she does not want to do. Instead, she lets Rolanda lead. Katiana can tell this is what Rolanda values most: the freedom to choose for herself. It is a small shift in approach that has made a lasting impact, strengthening Rolanda’s sense of independence and self-determination in everyday life.
A sign of trust
What Katiana is most proud of is how vocal and expressive Rolanda has become when they are together. From time to time, Rolanda will raise her hands and make a heart sign for Katiana, flashing the biggest smile. It is a simple gesture, but it speaks volumes. It is a genuine, joyful bond built on patience, trust, and respect.
Katiana Julien shows what it means to empower someone with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live with dignity and purpose. We are honored to have her as part of the Mercyland family. Call us: 202-525-1563. Visit: mercylandhi.com
