Staff Spotlight: The Heart Behind the Care

Mercyland Direct Support Professionals who support the people we serve.
Meet Yawae and Nelson, two of the DSPs at the heart of our care.

The strength of our services begins with the people who provide them.

Direct Support Professionals are more than caregivers. They are steady presences, advocates, encouragers, and anchors in the everyday lives of the people we support. This month, we are honored to spotlight Yawae and Nelson, two remarkable DSPs whose commitment reflects the heart of our mission.

Yawae and Mr. Jamal: building trust and independence

Yawae, Direct Support Professional at Mercyland, who supports Mr. Jamal.
Yawae supports Mr. Jamal’s daily structure and communication.

For Yawae, becoming a DSP came from a genuine heart for helping others and a desire to make a real difference in someone’s daily life. She values building trust and supporting independence, even on challenging days that call for patience and flexibility. What makes her proudest is seeing the person she supports grow in confidence and reach his goals, knowing she has been someone he can rely on.

“Since I began working with Mr. Jamal, I have seen steady progress in his routines, communication, and independence. He has become more comfortable with support, more consistent in following structure, and more engaged in working toward his goals. I am proud of his growth, and I look forward to continuing to support him.”

Thanks to the dedication of Yawae and the guidance of Service Coordinator Mr. Dweh Siklo, Mr. Jamal has found new opportunities to grow, thrive, and live more independently.

Nelson and Mr. Jerimah: consistency, respect, and everyday growth

Nelson, Direct Support Professional at Mercyland, who supports Mr. Jerimah.
Nelson brings consistency and respect to his work with Mr. Jerimah.

Nelson entered this field with a strong passion to help people with disabilities, and that passion continues to guide him every day. He faces real challenges, including complex behaviors, staff shortages, and emotional fatigue, yet he stays consistent and resilient. What brings him the most satisfaction is meeting the core goals of a DSP each day: keeping people safe, promoting dignity, and supporting independence. He knows that even small victories truly matter.

In his work with Mr. Jerimah, Nelson says he has been a pleasure to support from the very beginning. Jerimah is friendly, kind, organized, and understanding with everyone he meets. Nelson appreciates his positive attitude and the respectful way he treats others, and he is committed to supporting Jerimah’s continued growth and daily success. With the support of his DSP and his Service Coordinator, Ms. Charlene Smith, Jerimah has found spaces to thrive and live a fuller life.

The impact of direct support

Behind every milestone reached by the people we serve, there is often a DSP providing steady encouragement, calm guidance, and unwavering support. We know this work is not easy. It takes heart, patience, endurance, and compassion. Yawae and Nelson show what it means to support not just daily living, but fuller living. We are deeply grateful for their commitment and the difference they make every single day. Because at the center of quality care is something simple and powerful: people who care.
